step 1 of 12

Stage 1, create a single playing card.
Use a rectangle spline.
For the width and height settings use the playing card you are modeling it on. For myself this was 57*88mm.
Then you can apply rounded edges on the spline, just do this to eye.

step 2 of 12

Put this into an extrude nurbs object to add the depth. You dont need much thickness. I just had 0.3.
Once you have done this you can make the object editable and connect the caps.

step 3 of 12

Once you have the playing card you can apply the textures. The best textures are pictures of the real thing. I used a set of cards I own. A back piece and a face.

This is the image I used for the card back.

step 5 of 12

This is just one of the several face pictures that I took.

step 6 of 12

Using a cloner object we can quickly set up our cards. Once the settings are in place to add a clone every 2cm or so you can adjust the number to 52 (Cards in a deck) and it will automatically create them.

Creation of Playing Cards: Step 6

step 7 of 12

This stage is so we can talk about using the simulation properties.

You need a floor for the cards to collide with. Apply a collider tag to the floor. Change bounce to 10% and friction to 80%

Apply a ridged body tag to the cards inside the cloner. Change the settings to the same as for the floor and also change it to a "moving mesh"

Then to make sure the cards fall to the middle add in an attractor at the middle position. The default settings are fine.

step 8 of 12

This shows the animation starting up. Once it is baked you can move it around and get to the best setting.

Creation of Playing Cards: Step 8

step 9 of 12

This is the final sitting position for the cards.

Creation of Playing Cards: Step 9

step 10 of 12

Make some poker chips. This was done quickly. Just a default cylinder, lower height. A little bit of modeling to make some interesting groves. Self made textures.

Creation of Playing Cards: Step 10

step 11 of 12

Add a random step modifier. The settings are shown in this step.

Creation of Playing Cards: Step 11

step 12 of 12

This is the final scene. It shows the camera position. 3 point lighting. Composition.

Rendered with the physical render is Cinema, this automatically applies global illumination, anti aliasing and ambient occlusion.
