created a starry background. I first used a white image, then added noise. Used the color levels and brightness to to remove most of the white to leave mostly black with a few stars. added a gaussian blur to make the stars less sharp...
step 2 of 8
created a nebula using the marquee tool and some color gradients. then used some basic brushes to create dark spots, then a motion blur and gaussian blur to give it a more natural look.
step 3 of 8
cut out the moon and earth from the stock image used.
using the pen tool, i painstakingly cut out the gears i needed from the source image.
step 5 of 8
earth inside main gear, and some lighting elements to give it more depth.
step 6 of 8
added in additional gears. made all the gears to appear as if they are there, but only visible in just the right lighting, and added the moon on a gear as well. added additional lighting and shading to each of the gears as needed.
step 7 of 8
added in a large arm that would be holding the earth as it revolves around the sun... or my interpretation of the arm at least... ;]
step 8 of 8
added in a lens flare and some additional texture effects to achieve the finished look.
