Made an opacity map using CS5. Layer masked the pilot. Used the color for a "diffuse" or color map in 3D Studio Max. The whited out version is the opacity map for Max. ( works like a layer mask in Photoshop)

The parts consist of cylinders, boxes and capsule geometries. Adjustments to poly's, vertices and edges were used to refine some detail.
