Open the image of the yellow lizard and mask the animal. I used quick mask.
step 2 of 16
Double click on the background layer (the image of the lizard) to transform it into a normal layer. Place a new layer under it and fill it with a dark red #690000.
step 3 of 16
Hide the lizard's layer and place the image of the petals. In a layer mask paint with a soft brush to clean the edges.
step 4 of 16
Now it's just a matter of duplicating the petals layer and place them so the canvas is covered.
step 5 of 16
Flip horizontal, and vertical, and both, so the effect doesn't seem too uniform. In the end I had 20 layers of petals.
step 6 of 16
Now I have my bed of roses, but it looks too flat. So I added some shadows to the petals, but only in the four top layers.
Place the cursor on the top layer and Ctrl+click to select the petals. Invers the selection. Create a new layer underneath and paint the shadows with a soft brush, 40% opacity. Color #690000, layer blending mode multiply.
step 7 of 16
Do this with the first four petal layers. Here is an image without the background that shows the shadows.
step 8 of 16
step 9 of 16
Place the image of Miss Lizz (unhide it). As the head is too out of focus, I decided to use another head. Blend the neck with a layer mask and a soft, low opacity brush.
step 10 of 16
Make three adjustment layers to the head (in a cliping mask):
Levels: black 25, white 209.
Color balance: midtones 0, -31, -9
Hue/sat: lightness +25.
step 11 of 16
Now create a new layer underneath the lizard and paint shadows, again with soft brush and color #69000. Layer's blending mode multiply.
step 12 of 16
Create a new layer on top of the lizzard and paint shadows on the body, but this time with color #442f2e.
step 13 of 16
Another layer (just in case) to paint the shadows of the head.
step 14 of 16
Now cut some petals and place them at "strategic" places.
step 15 of 16
Create new layer under these petals and paint the shadows.
step 16 of 16
And this is the final image after putting it all together. As an afterthought I made a copy of the image (Shift+Control+Alt+e) and set this layer with blending mode soft light, opacity 50%.
