step 1 of 22

Starting with an idea i gathered 2 additional textures i would need that could not be found in the original image. using the transform tools and the bevel and emboss FX prepared the textures to build the base shape of the hull

Creation of Rough Seas: Step 1
sources used for this step:

step 2 of 22

formed the basic hull shape.

Creation of Rough Seas: Step 2

step 3 of 22

using the same textures and tools i added the upper rails

Creation of Rough Seas: Step 3

step 4 of 22

still working with the same two textures i built the cabin and mast

Creation of Rough Seas: Step 4

step 5 of 22

found in the custom shape tool drop down i used this standard shape to create the ornamental scrolling on the hull and added a bit of bevel and emboss FX, molded to shape with the warp and transform tools

Creation of Rough Seas: Step 5

step 6 of 22

Hear it is molded, transformed and applied to the hull. i colored it with color selections found in the original source image

Creation of Rough Seas: Step 6

step 7 of 22

Here i removed the scull to prepare the source image for extracting the lizard body to remove the legs and begin building my serpants

Creation of Rough Seas: Step 7

step 8 of 22

here are the cuts from the source and the adaptions for the serpent body, also the scull i removed earlier that i will be using a bit later

Creation of Rough Seas: Step 8

step 9 of 22

created the serpent heads from shapes made with the brush tool and textured with a texture found in the original source, also went ahead and made a pattern swatch out of the texture for uses later. lengthened the serpent body and using the transform tools shaped it in to a snake shape and began working with the scull. after shaped i formed the sculpture to be applied to the hull

Creation of Rough Seas: Step 9

step 10 of 22

here it is added to the hull. textured and colored from selections taken from the original image

Creation of Rough Seas: Step 10

step 11 of 22

building the braces for the hull i cut selection from the original image and used the distort tool to straighten its perspective for shaping into place on the hull

Creation of Rough Seas: Step 11

step 12 of 22

here i added the support bands to the hull

Creation of Rough Seas: Step 12

step 13 of 22

here are the selections from the original source image i have chosen for overlays in building up the texture on the hull. the middle shape was found in the stock shapes offered in the custom shape tool drop down menu

Creation of Rough Seas: Step 13

step 14 of 22

Here are the texture overlays applied

Creation of Rough Seas: Step 14

step 15 of 22

using basic shapes and textures found in the original source and in the pattern fill drop down menu i created ropes and chains

Creation of Rough Seas: Step 15

step 16 of 22

using the transform tools i shaped the chains and ropes and applied them to the image

Creation of Rough Seas: Step 16

step 17 of 22

using the same custom shape selection from the basic shapes offered standard in Photoshop i used the transform tools and bevel and emboss to create the sea weed. colored from color selections found in the original source

Creation of Rough Seas: Step 17

step 18 of 22

here is the sea weed added

Creation of Rough Seas: Step 18

step 19 of 22

created the storm clouds using the render clouds filter and burn and dodge tools

Creation of Rough Seas: Step 19

step 20 of 22

using color selections from the original source and the fan brush, standard brush and select texture brushes found in the brushes drop down menu i painted in the waves and rain

Creation of Rough Seas: Step 20

step 21 of 22

using the standard brush and color selections from the original source i painted in the corners for a vignette

Creation of Rough Seas: Step 21

step 22 of 22

added gaussian blur to the vignette layer and started color and contrast tweeks
