What's monumental about the place, is that it's the venue where the first modern Olympic Games were held, back in 1896 (i.e., just a short while ago!) (5 years and 3735 days ago)

Tks, adein. It's a long story with this one; had a group of Japanese tourists standing in front of me, so I used what little of their language I knew back from my days as a seaman, upon which they were more then happy to oblige by getting the heck out of the way. Nice people, and I mean it.

Situated in Constitution Square, downtown Athens, Greece, this is one of the city’s main tourist attractions, not so much because of the monument itself, but rather because of the men (Evzones) standing guard there round the clock, donned in the traditional 19th century costume.
