Knocking on wood, The expression is usually used in the hope that a good thing will continue to occur after it has been acknowledged. So, for example, one might say: "The rain looks like it's holding, knock on wood", or "Knock on wood, I'm much better now." It's supposed to be linked to the physician coming in a hurry and throwing his hat on the bed. In other words, someone is seriously ill.

It is. Just try to put a hat on a bed in Naples and wait for the reaction of the people around you...
