the DOF is very clever, but I feel cropping almost half of the bottom off would make for a much more powerful image.

9 frames is alot... more frames of different exposures gets you more range. A lot of HDR is done quickly with 3 exposures.

Yepp 9 frames that's maximum for what d300 can bracket. So i gave it a try

Yes it is friiskiwi. (sweden) i know it's centered but if i'd have used the rule of third the tree would have framed the house pretty bad.
