Photography is the art of capturing light. Infrared photography on the other hand, is the art of capturing invisible light. Your goal in this contest is to take an infrared picture of anything and show it to us. Post-editing is allowed, but it's important that you capture your photo with an IR-Filter.
For the ones who are not familiar with the concept, you can read about it HERE. Good luck!
Required level: 10+ or higher. Status: finished. Check out the winners below!
smokebigbird: ok i dont have a IR Filter, can anyone give a alternative option ? Thanks ( 5 years and 3518 days ago )
jawshoewhah: I am guessing that there is a feature on photoshop that will turn the photo into infrared. Question is, is PS allowed to use. Also did a search and IR len's don't seem to be too expensive online but by the time I get it I don't think I'll have time to enter. ( 5 years and 3517 days ago )
kyricom: No IR filter. My guess is that there won't be many entries in this ( 5 years and 3517 days ago )
kyricom: I looked at this tutorial, and it's basically take pictures with a special filter, but looking at all the examples, I can't help but think that this isn't really infrared photography. Infrared measures heat. It's where you see people (for example) looking red in contrast to the nonheated surroundings. ( 5 years and 3517 days ago )
friiskiwi: There are a lot of tutorials on the net on how to do fake infrared photos, but I guess this is for those who have a filter or an infrared camera. I'm not one of them and don't have enough intrest in the subject to go and buy a filter., ( 5 years and 3517 days ago )
adeincyprus: personally, I don't think there will be too many entries in this, and most of those are likely to be fakes....I don't have IR filter, and I don't think I want to go buuy one and then go through all the hassle that the tutorial speaks about........ ( 5 years and 3517 days ago )
MaRkSqUiRrEl: Yep, Same here, No IR filter, and defnetly havnt got a converted camera. ( 5 years and 3517 days ago )
Contest Moderator: Only pics shot with an actual IR filter are allowed. Simulating the effect in photoshop is not allowed. ( 5 years and 3517 days ago )
jawshoewhah: Well HELL! I'm gonna go out of my way an get an IR filter now if none of you are going to enter. I might actually stand a chance. :P ( 5 years and 3517 days ago )
jawshoewhah: Apparently most DSLR cameras have an IR setting on them. Is it ok to use the setting on the camera? (if I can find it) Not really finding IR filers locally and only online Apparently IR filters are not too popular with DSLR's because I guess most make a setting. ( 5 years and 3517 days ago )
maclu2iaf: i like the way you thinking Joshua, its a good add up for you in experimenting photography!....and sad for me its going to be raining, cloudy and bloody fogging for the whole week here! they should sell weather on ebay too. damn it ! ( 5 years and 3517 days ago )
jawshoewhah: This is what one of the employees at the camera store told me. IR FILERS ARE primaily used on traditionl film cameras and I think a lot of filters are, because as soem of you know traditional film cameras do not have the different picture settings. I think in all fairness, and to get some entries, the IR setting on my DSLR 9when I can find it) should be the equivalent as an actual filter. ( 5 years and 3517 days ago )
jawshoewhah: ooops... I hate it when that happens. I can't find an IR setting. Besides, it seems IR filer is the only way to go. Also found some info saying DSLRs work just fine with them. Now I just need to find one..... ( 5 years and 3517 days ago )
MaRkSqUiRrEl: Found this tut on turning an old point and push camera into a IR camera. - http://geektechnique.org/projectlab/254/how-to-turn-a-digital-camera-into-an-ir-camera ( 5 years and 3517 days ago )
smokebigbird: i would need more then a week to work it out ( 5 years and 3516 days ago )
MaRkSqUiRrEl: LoL, thats what i was thinking. Interesting tho. ( 5 years and 3516 days ago )
UncleJimmy: mos if not all dslr's have a hi-pass ir "blocking" filter installed underneath the color "bergen" filter placed over the cmos sensor...makes ir very difficult without an IR filter on the lens. Just so happens I shot a lot of IR in my B&W film days on IR sensitive film, but unfortunately I can't seem to find the original negs! I was actually thinking of having an old point and shoot converted, costs about $79 USD and lots of places will do it for you...but won't have one this week either...guess if someone can, we will have a sure winner! ( 5 years and 3515 days ago )
jawshoewhah: I think this contest should be put on a back burner until some of us can aquire an IR filter. I can only find them online. ( 5 years and 3514 days ago )
Nator: They still make infrared film...lol...try a red filter it is far better results IMO. ( 5 years and 3512 days ago )
jawshoewhah: I don't mind getting anIR filter and I actually think it would be fun to try it out on different shots. I just can't seem to find one locally. I can't be the only one who feels this way, after all there's STILL no entries. ( 5 years and 3512 days ago )
dollmommy: There would be entries if this contest wasn't open to just 10+ levels. I would love to enter this one but am only a lowly level 1 in photography. ( 5 years and 3512 days ago )
UncleJimmy: The entries thus far appear off topic...I did some research on light frequency and IR filters on wikipedia and found that IR filters are tuned to allow in ONLY light at the 720+ nanometer range, all other color blue(400nm) orange (600nm) and so-fourth would be totally blocked by the IR filter...in other words...there would be no color as we know it...IR images result in "false color" which has to be correced (purple-ish tint throught the photo) and result in a strange B&W type image... ( 5 years and 3512 days ago )
UncleJimmy: Well...after days of struggling with hue, saturation and color channels...I finally had a "DUH" moment and figured out the whole color problem and an easy soultion. If you have a camera that is capable of shooting in RAW, it's quite easy! upon raw conversion, just like in studio shots...simply go to click white balance and click the dropper on something that's supposed to be white and "presto" problem solved. All the magenta hue disappears like magic and now process like any other photo! ( 5 years and 3510 days ago )
jawshoewhah: This sucks, only reason I couldn't enter was because I didn't have the right equipment...... ( 5 years and 3508 days ago )

I don't think it's flare as the sun appears to be nearly behind the photographer, it appears more like a hotspot created when a lens "disagrees" with an IR filter...happens
i'm not really sure is it a flare or hotspot. Only in this church photo that orb appeared, and its hardly seen on my camera display. i only notice it appearance when im editing it. thank you.
there are 3 orbs that I can see.......a green one that is obvious, one light blue lower left of the green one, and another lighter colored one high right of the green one.....they are in a line, which does indicate lens flare..
@ Ade...yes...i stand corrected...I see them now, appologies...
author says:
actually both of you are right, after i analysed other of my photos i found out that 2 orbs on the left are actually the lens flare and the other one is the hot spot (mostly appeared on my ir photo)
Beautiful scene for an infrared photo, turned out excellent!! They do say that infrareds have more of a chance of catching lens flare. You did well. Best of luck to you!!
Very peaceful soft look you got with this one. Nicely done. GL
author says:
Thanks - the weather was not really agreeing with me and the wind was blowing like all heck...caused the ripples on the water to give that soft look like a waterfall or ocean does on long exposure and the tips of the trees blurred because the branches wouldn't hold still...forgot how hard this was until now.
just did some quick research on wikipedia and IR filters are tuned to let in light frequencies of 720 + nanometers, orange is 600nm and would therefore be blocked by an IR filter...IMO, this photo is not possible with an IR filter attached...I would be interested to know how this one was done
author says:
Before i've done this photo, i did 4 days of research on how in the world to create an ir picture. This picture was taken with R720 52mm ir filter (bought from ebay) and in 30sec exposure. Sound easy yeh.? Honestly its not easy at all...that given tutorial only for a quick guide and it does not tells you everything. Now the 2nd pain in my arse, how to process this photo...it was really toughed to play with the mixer channel, temp, hue etc to get a good color balance and no matter how hard you try you can't get a sharp photo in ir filter..continued
Thank you author for the explination...now I see where the orange came from...channel mixer! I know how hard it is to get IR in focus...Have done many with film...the different wavelenght of light causes the focus to be off if you don't have IR markings on the lens itself...good work...
EDIT: btw...different lenses all handle IR filters differently as far a focus and detail are concerned...many have UV and IR resistant coatings to make the visible light "POP" and makes it a real bugger if trying IR...
author says:
so this is my very first ir filter photo, and its not my best yet (because of the weather and still lack of knowledge). If you guys have any questions i'm happy to answer. Thank you for all comments.
Yes, i certainly agree with you james, it makes alot of different with uv filter too..and still trying to figure out how is the best way to process an ir image. Saw alot of tuto for this, and it has no limit in editing..and now i realized its all about artistic in photography.
This is nice, the noise is typical in these digital infrared photos. It is one of the drawbacks of the long exposure time. What tint did this one have before the adjustments, mine always turn out deep magenta before processing. Good luck.
author says:
Thank you and yes...it was originally a magenta as would be expected. I always shoot in RAW and after experimenting for a day or two with PS trying to adjust hue ect...I simply went back to the RAW converter and used CWB to get this result instantly..."DUH Moment!"
neat coloration and good focus here, that is one of the hard parts, especially when you can't see what you're doing...it's almost like being a blind photographer!
author says:
thank you james, i understand what you mean. normally i do the focus without the filter first with f9 to f14.
Very nice. What method of processing did you do with this one to achieve the colorization? Good Luck!!
author says:
for the processing, i follow this tutorial from youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Yv6jFwtu_s but not 100% to follow the setting. different weather have different setting. thank you.
looks like a little lens flare has crept in..........
I don't think it's flare as the sun appears to be nearly behind the photographer, it appears more like a hotspot created when a lens "disagrees" with an IR filter...happens
nice one

outstanding!
I lens flare too. Is there a point??? Nice image. GL!
Congrats for another first place in your collection!
