Lens Flare - Photography Contest [30 entries]

Morning Flare Picture

Winning entry, with a score of:
65.4%
Contest goal:

Lens flare is the light scattered in lens systems through generally unwanted image formation mechanisms, such as internal reflection and scattering from material inhomogeneities in the lens. These mechanisms differ from the intended image formation mechanism that depends on refraction of the image rays.

For good optical systems and most images, flare is a secondary effect that is widely distributed across the image and thus not visible. However, in this contest your goal is to make sure that the flare is visible, in the most artistic way possible.

adeincyprus: is this a smart contest for digicam users.......being as how sensors get damaged by too much light hitting them. ( 5 years and 3565 days ago )
iquraishi: hhmm... yea it could be.. but as the required skill level says 10+ we are going to see true, amazing & inspiring entries.. ( 5 years and 3565 days ago )
adeincyprus: the level of a user is not necessarily the measure of a good photographer. A new user who is a brilliant photographer is eligible to enter the low level contests!!! ( 5 years and 3565 days ago )
jawshoewhah: The re-wrote the contest guide lines. I only wrote the last line. I thought it would be a good suggestion and was guessing it might be a higher skill level. ( 5 years and 3565 days ago )
kyricom: Some nice shots... but it seems like on many of them people are confusing a star filter with lens flare ( 5 years and 3563 days ago )
UncleJimmy: Agree w/ kyricom, lans flare is usually ondicated by the repeated pattern of orbs or lights falling across most of the frame...if done correctly ( on purpose or otherwise) you can even tell how many elements in how many groups the lens has by counting the orbs. You can also see in some the number and shape of the appature blades... ( 5 years and 3563 days ago )
bf2015: I looked at the definition of lens flare, and you're right kyricom. I think though, most of the entries are going to be some sort of star patterns. I personally don't use star filters, however, most of the nikon lenses I use create in-lens "star" effects. ( 5 years and 3562 days ago )
friiskiwi: hate to think what this contest is doing to my sensor, but it's certainly giving me a headache. ( 5 years and 3560 days ago )
jawshoewhah: I know it's a little late but I just did some reading on it. Apparently zoom lenses will do more damage than say standard lenses. So as long as you are using a standard 18-55, we should be fine. Here's my reference: http://photo.net/digital-camera-forum/009ltO ( 5 years and 3558 days ago )

I am not keen on shooting in the direction of the sun, I usually try and avoid it where possible. This shot was taken late afternoon, as the sun burst through the clouds, I could not resist shooting it.
I converted to black and white, I liked the effect, it has more impact I think. (5 years and 3563 days ago)
