Good photos are like good jokes. If you have to explain it, it just isn't that good. Sometimes it is interesting to hear the story behind the photo, and you see the photo in a new light, but in most cases a good photo shouldn't need an explanation. It should speak for itself.
The goal of this contest is to show us a photograph which tells a story. Maybe a dog waiting for his master or a child who got bruised after being too active on the playground... To make sure you're on theme, please make sure to read about it HERE. This tutorial will give you more details on how to take shots that appear to have a story behind it.
Required level: 10+ or higher. Status: finished. Check out the winners below!
mperri: This is sooo subjective... This is one of those contests where people will be defending their photos forever!!! ( 5 years and 3516 days ago )
jawshoewhah: I am guessing that if there is a controversal subject or perhaps more than one subject doing something differntly from the other subjects, it might make a good entry. In fact, it almost seems like the onlhy off theme entries would be (pictiures of white washed walls or portraits but still I guess they are also open to debate as to what kind of story it tells. I am thinking just looking for entries with a conroversal subject or a lot going on so it will take you a few to really sok it all in. Is that what you had in mind, Guilla? Feel free to confirm or correct me if I'm a little off as far as interpretaion. ( 5 years and 3515 days ago )
jawshoewhah: Or even entries that show less pose and more possibility of action like the photo is a page of a story. I think I am closer with that one ( 5 years and 3515 days ago )
mperri: This is one of those contests where a photo montage would be easier to narrow down the on topics! ( 5 years and 3515 days ago )
nikola: why is there levels on this?? why do i need to be 10th level or above to submit entry, that's stupid.. this is a great topic, and i have a great photo taken yesterday and im new to this, so i can't submit? thank you.. -.- ( 5 years and 3514 days ago )
adeincyprus: @nikola, it'll come round again sometime...... ( 5 years and 3513 days ago )
UncleJimmy: @ nikola - don't worry, sometimes some of us are really wanting to enter in some of the 10- contests also, it kinda goes both ways... ( 5 years and 3510 days ago )

A great, creative shot. Might work just a little better if the hat were on the chair. It kind of blends in the way it is now. But, overall, a wonderful shot
It's a nice shot but I am a little confused, perhaps you were implying that there were men who fought wars and they were forever memorialized in this statue? Ok, maybe you don't need a description, since I decided to think about it. IT probably just seemed lacking because of the single subject but that's just IMO until I get a good grasp of what the theme should specifically entail. So never mind, it's on theme but the one subject seems to simplify it for it's obviousness. So good luck
Jaw... I ADORED this questioning!lol
Basically, yes, I can make up an entire story behind anything... even a blank wall... but the theme makes it quite impossible to narrow down the on and off topics!
The shot is gret though... I love angled photos!
Jawsh - the statue depicts a soldier holding a handful of dog tags - most likely from his fallen comrades - So he is more than likely remembering his mates
author says:
Thank you Fallinghorse...I see you get it...I was a decorated war vet and platoon leader...I held this pose...it was sad to lose your men in combat. Guess things just speak more to some than others...
I thought the story here was obvious from the get go, and was surprised to read comments that were questioning that as it is a very strong statement. Very well done.
Ziggy -
I did not question it... but when I look at a picture of a statue, I tend to imagine the story behind the picture, and not the statue... I actually made up this whole story in my head about how the photographer felt as he looked at this statue and remembered someone dear who had been lost in war... because, honestly, the statue itself is a pretty obvious "story"... understand my comment now?
Hi Auther if some people need a story tell them this one.
For the Fallen
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning.
We will remember them.
Great shot GL
