Photographers can find beauty and form in the simplest of things. Photographer Simon Nathan used to photograph individual letters of the alphabet where ever he found them, eventually gathering a collection that showed the endless variety of patterns that could be found in something as basic as the alphabet.
Your goal in this contest is to do what Simon Nathan did and get a shot of a single letter of the alphabet. Pattern and detail are the key. I suggest macro for these kinds of entries, but it's not required. NO OTHER LETTERS should be seen. Just one.
Required level: 10- or lower. Status: finished. Check out the winners below!
Lamantine: glad they used your suggestion , josh ( 5 years and 3600 days ago )
jawshoewhah: They used three suggestions for photography and 2 for photoshop ( 5 years and 3600 days ago )
Lamantine: for me, they used 3 for photography and 3 for photoshop ( 5 years and 3599 days ago )
Shikyo: I was wondering, would shapes count that resemble an letter in a way that it would be clearly visible or would this be out of the topic? ( 5 years and 3599 days ago )
jawshoewhah: In order to avoid getting removed, I would just stick to photographing an actual letter of the alphabet. Also keep in mind, I never specified it had to be the English alphabet, although the most common, definitely not the only one out there ( 5 years and 3599 days ago )

FallingHorse: was looking forward to this one but just made it to lvl 10 ( 5 years and 3598 days ago )
pingenvy: Do you have any links for Simon Nathan? I was looking online to see his work & couldn't find him. ( 5 years and 3598 days ago )
kyricom: Darn it... I have to look at these more closely... have two nice shots ready to upload - only then do I realize it's for below level 10 Oh well ( 5 years and 3598 days ago )
jawshoewhah: I found the idea in my Nikon D50 field manual. so no I have no links. ( 5 years and 3596 days ago )

this is a beautiful picture but it seems off theme because I didn't see a letter until I saw the name
author says:
Thanks k5683. But I took this picture for this letter. May "B" it's difficult to see as I see. But I think you will definitely find it after reading the name. Hihihi, just kidding...
Before reading the title, it is hard to see what letter it's meant to be. After the title it becomes rather simple to see. Lovely picture. It's really too bad the letter itself isn't clearer.
The shot is beautiful... but, I too had difficulties finding a letter until I read the title... And, for as much as I try, before I see a B, I actually see a D...
It is the first letter of the Sanskrit alphabet, and it is said to be the first sound produced by the breath of a new-born child ......

cool description. Thanks for the info (beautiful piece of jewelry too). Could have used a little black along the top to frame it more... a little cut-off looking.
Absolutely perfect.....
Additional Info:AUM is very powerful....AUM consists of three phonemes, a, u and m, variously symbolizing the Three Vedas or the Hindu Trimurti or three stages in life ( birth, life and death ). Though ostensibly in some traditions it is polysyllabic and vocalized as a triphthong, the Omkara is held to move through and contain all vowels possible in human speech.
Impressive entry author....
I'm not sure what is with the background of this shot. It looks like some half completed Photoshop work on the l/h side of the '3' and again above the crescent. It is more noticeable in the high res.
author says:
No, never. It is not Photoshoped and the background is just a black cloth. I don't know even basics of PS. Just curves and brightness-contrast.
I see that there are other alphabets too.. any specific reason to choose 'V'...?
author [banned] says:
I found these in a baby goods shop and the lady there was kind enough to let me take pics, but I didn't want to be there all day imposing on her, this was the letter that gave me the best composition when i got home.
I really like the reflection on of the "@", even though I slightly wish there would be little more to be seen.
As for it being a letter or not, it clearly has an "a" in it, therefore it should be counted as one. A lot artistic letters are far from what they're are generally seen or even if you look at the old alphabet, which should also count for this contest. Anyway, I really like the idea for choosing this "a" instead of just a normal one, nyaa.
I'm going to have to agree w/ kyricom and friiskiwi, a bit too much of a stretch to get a letter out of an otherwise beautiful photo, I might have saved this for a different competition...
Thats the prob with this site. OT but still does well. Why have guidelines.
The people that disagree vote for things off topic all the time so it really doesnt matter.

The B is in the 'negative' black space.
its still hard to see
Wonderful lights, excellent shot
