'Focus' is one of the most important elements of photography. An image focused well is appreciated by everyone. But don't assume that 'focus' always means 'in focus'

Sometimes a 'defocused' image looks beautiful too. Let's try to search for beauty in 'OOF.' For example look at this defocused lights picture.. The originality should be the key factor for this idea.

FallingHorse: I don't really get this one. What exactly is defocus - are we talking soft focus or are we talking bad shots that should have been deleted from our drive ages ago?? How do we decide what is the best of our out of focus shots - might as well just upload rubbish shots - that's what it sound like. ( 5 years and 3485 days ago )

Contest Moderator: no, fallinghorse, not just rubbish shots.........the shot should be obviously out of focus......but should still have the potential to be a good shot....with good framing etc.....just that the focus was off some......... ( 5 years and 3485 days ago )

Contest Moderator: Usually, motion blur is deliberate.....it occurs when shooting smething that is on the move, or panning something moving, then the background or foreground has the motion blur effect. Out of focus, generally, is accidental, unless the background or foregound, or both, have deliberately been defocused because of the depth of field at the time of shoot. Contest Moderator: In photography, soft focus is a lens flaw, in which the lens forms images that are blurred due to spherical aberration. A soft focus lens deliberately introduces spherical aberration in order to give the appearance of blurring the image while retaining sharp edges; it is not the same as an out-of-focus image, and the effect cannot be achieved simply by defocusing a sharp lens. Soft focus is also the name of the style of photograph produced by such a lens. ( 5 years and 3483 days ago )

k5683: My entry "Beautiful Glow" was removed because it supposedly was off topic. The picture was out of focus--not motion blurred and I didn't use a soft lens either because I don't own one! I don't understand why, but I tell ya, there are plainly many off theme entries here that are blurred because of motion or zoom blur---which by the way I did not zoom AS I WAS TAKING THE PICTURE! I zoomed in as far as I could go because it was so far away. I'm a bit upset about this. ( 5 years and 3483 days ago )

arbroono: just want to understand. whether motion blur photographs are expected here? My photograph (Blind darkness), I purposely shot by defocousing the lens and set long shutter to get some random shaking effect.. Is this what expected? ( 5 years and 3482 days ago )
