Storms, clouds, tornadoes, hurricanes, monsoons, and lightning are a few examples of weather that we love to photograph. For this contest take a shot of dramatic weather. Ordinary shots of rain or overcast skies will be considered off topic, make it Dramatic!
The definition of Drama that will be used for this contest is:
Arresting or forceful in appearance or effect.
jawshoewhah: Nice 1 Adam. ( 5 years and 3436 days ago )
friiskiwi: does it mean bad weather or is good dramatic O.K.? ( 5 years and 3434 days ago )
Contest Moderator: In this contest we are looking for "bad" dramatic weather... ( 5 years and 3434 days ago )
nita1983: can we use aftermath of bad weather? last night a small town near me had their first ever tornado hit..this is extremely rare cos we dont get them here..the damage is quite extreme ( 5 years and 3433 days ago )

friiskiwi: Locksmith, lets have your thoughts. Personally I feel the after effects of dramatic weather should be allowed. But we need to remember it must also be a good photograph, not just a dramatic scene. ( 5 years and 3433 days ago )
nita1983: where i live we are lucky if we get one storm a year and that generally only last for about 10 mins....we get rain but not anything to bad...the dont have snow storms, or tornados (apart from last nights), so we pretty limited here...haha ( 5 years and 3433 days ago )
locksmagic: Friiskiwi it's ultimately up to the mod but when I suggested this I had the weather itself in mind, I think the aftermath is for a different contest. So in my opinion anything but the weather itself is off topic. But thats just my opinion. ( 5 years and 3433 days ago )
Contest Moderator: for this contest, we will stick to the weather itself and save the aftermath shots for another contest please... ( 5 years and 3432 days ago )
trace_s: Moderator - Could you please explain how flooded creeks are off theme but flooded monuments and suburbs are not ( 5 years and 3432 days ago )
friiskiwi: I guess we will have to wait and se what gets removed. It would be great to have a seperate section for removed photos with an explanation, not for discussing, but for learning, but I realise it would probably bring down the site with the amount of comments. ( 5 years and 3432 days ago )
friiskiwi: I hope the mods will be quick to remove off topics images in this contest, so we don't get confused. ( 5 years and 3432 days ago )

This was one mighty snow storm. The light source is a nearby gas station, hence the reason why only a portion of the tree is well lit. It also helped show all the falling snow. (5 years and 3434 days ago)
I live in Sacramento...don't get much snow. Also new to photog...I am assuming that is snow in the background. How or what did you do to make it look this way? It looks kind of "furry" (sorry for the odd description). Thanks.
This is a magnificent photo. I live in Northern Minnesota and have seen my share of blizzards. You have masterfully captured the desolate mood and pure beauty of a genuine winter snow storm. Well done!
author says:
Thank you very much. Gigi, I didn't do anything special here. The snow was thick, and falling hard, hence the "furry" look = ) The light source was coming from the right only, and I think that helped show the snow. Athousandwords, thank you, I truly got lucky here, right place, right time.
Friiskiwi, thank you for your nice comment.
Absolutely fantastic ! Even the ground is great ! It's my own vision but I feel like I'm in a Tim Burton movie watching your Picture ! Good luck !
author says:
Thank you guys very much. I was coming back from work, and since I'm so addicted to taking pictures, I bring my camera with me everywhere. Sometimes it really works out =)
Good eye, but it's not true HDR. I tone mapped a single RAW file. You get more noise that way but by doing it from 1 image you can get "HDR" action shots and most importantly your entry can't be removed for "Putting together a new picture from various other pictures"
LOL... figured it was from one image simply due to the waves. Great job..... noise isnt too bad. Wonderful colors. Well done. I have a weakness for "HDR" like images.
The blurriness is intentional, I wanted this to have a soft look so that when tone mapped it would have oil painting look to it. Not all photos have to be completely sharp. In this case there is acceptable sharpness for the style I was trying to convey. As far as it being over edited that's a matter of opinion.
decidedly different and it does have the oil painting quality to it...overall a good entry, well done author, the single shot HDR is an interesting solution to the multi-exposure ban...
ziggyx2003 [banned] says:
I have to disagree, I find it too blurry, the colours appear unnatural, and i didnt realise the multi exposure ban was actually in effect.
Well it seems that yet again a key point in one of my photos that I found to be artistically appealing isn't viewed like I had hoped Well I suppose to each his own.
I'd be happy to supply the original image to the mod for clarification if they would like.
Author, the fact I'm a mod doesn't mean I'm asking to see the original as a mod. I'm a graphic mod and am just a member in the photocontests. The reason I asked is just pure interest and part of my learningcurve.
Please do not be offended.
author says:
Rob, I wasn't offended in any way. I'm sorry it came across that way. If you'd like to see it PM me and let me know where you'd like me to send it
Thanks. We certainly were all running inside ASAP. Everyone was rushing around either closing windows and turning off air conditioners or trying to get photos then closing windows etc. I left it a bit late to go inside and got very dusty
EDIT: although this is an awesome find, after looking again I find that if you rotated the horizon (the edges of the houses tilt to the left) it would really make this shot perfect. Just plumb the edges of the houses. GL again!
