jawshoewhah: You definitely have the advantage on this contest, Captgeo. I wonder if we are going to see any "Kickass" costumes ( 5 years and 3390 days ago )
kyricom: Maybe we should use the older definition of "hero" rather than what it has evolved into today, where almost everyone can be a hero. ( 5 years and 3390 days ago )
maclu2iaf: How about spiderman, superman and batman? ( 5 years and 3389 days ago )
kyricom: so far, no "heroes in action" posted ( 5 years and 3385 days ago )
adeincyprus: so, firemen are the only heroes!!...........oh, we do have a volunteer sports coach, well done author! ( 5 years and 3384 days ago )
adeincyprus: so, firemen are the only heroes!!...........oh, we do have a volunteer sports coach, well done author! ( 5 years and 3384 days ago )
kyricom: ummmm, actually, none of them are heroes ( 5 years and 3384 days ago )
adeincyprus: I think that depends in what context you see them! ( 5 years and 3384 days ago )
kyricom: People today confuse nobility or altruism with heroism... no heroes posted here yet (although actually catching a picture of one in action would be very rare, so I guess everyone will be happy with what's here) ( 5 years and 3384 days ago )
adeincyprus: do you have kids Kyricom........do they not see their Parents as heroes, often the Dad is seen as such! ( 5 years and 3383 days ago )
kyricom: That just makes my kids wrong, it doesn't make me a hero. Firemen, for example, (a favorite target for the "hero" label) are not heroes, they are firemen. There absolutely ARE heroic firemen, but just being a fireman does not make you a hero. It makes you employed. If you don't want to fight fires, then don't become a fireman. Audie Murphy was a hero. A teacher (or soldier, or coach, or parent, or... or... ) is someone doing what everyone does... fulfilling normal responsibilities. But we have to call pretty much EVERYONE a hero in some way for some strange reason. "Oh, he donated his time coaching kids' soccer after a long day at work, what a HERO!" "Oh, she gave 3 neighborhood kids a ride, what a hero!" Oh, he joined the military, what a hero!" What a load of hogwash. The problem is that by labelling almost everyone a hero, in SOMEONE's eyes (my kids just because I'm a dad?) it dilutes the power of labelling TRUE heroes. The true heroes deserve it, the rest of us don't. ( 5 years and 3383 days ago )
captgeo: I kinda agree with Kryicom's idea of heroes...As a 20+ year firefighter I have kids and people say we are "heroes". I politely disagree to them and tell them we are just doing our "job". I have done some heroic things...almost died in a few fires but I do not think of myself or my crews as heroes. Others may think we are but we are just doing what we do best. Heroes can come in many forms and I guess can be "heroic" in many ways. I think, as is beauty, it is in the eyes of the beholder? ( 5 years and 3383 days ago )
UncleJimmy: The Definition of Hero from dictionay.com : Hero -–noun, plural -roes; for 5 also -ros. 1. a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. 2. a person who, in the opinion of others, has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model or ideal: He was a local hero when he saved the drowning child. ,as you see, it is Others opinions that make one a hero and heroic deeds are in teh eye of the beholders as it were...the definition can be broadly applied. Every heor, when confronted by their heroic actions usually replies with "I just did what anyone else would have done" or "i was just doing my job"....it is the hallmark of the hero not to consider the deed heroic... ( 5 years and 3383 days ago )
kyricom: Everything you've said above is true. There ARE heroic firemen, local people saving drowning children etc. And, very often true heroes are modest (another redeeming quality). If I declare MYSELF a hero - "HEY EVERYONE, I'M A HERO!" - then most would just say I'm just arrogant. Of course it's in the eyes of others. The problem is, that nowadays, especially after a couple of generations of schools, homes, politicians et al worrying about everyone's self-esteem, the threshhold for what "everyone" cosiders a "hero" is rock bottom. When EVERYONE is a hero, TRUE heroes get lost in the crowd. I have truckloads of respect for firefighters (and others). They are far braver than myself. But, if they didn't want to fight fires they wouldn't have gone into that vocation. If a neighbor's house catches on fire and a local teenager happens to be near and runs into the burning house, without training or regard for themselves, in order to save the baby inside, then THEY are a hero. THAT is distinguished courage, a brave deed with noble qualities, concerned for others without regard for themselves. THEY are a hero. Someone coaching a little league team isn't. UncleJimmy: Point taken... ( 5 years and 3383 days ago )
adeincyprus: everyone is entitled to an opinion......and you have voiced yours well......... ( 5 years and 3382 days ago )

These are wounded veterans who travel and ride across the country to raise money for other disabled veterans. Not only did they sacrifice so much of themselves (literally) but they still give by riding modified "bikes".
