Dogme 95 (aka Dogma) is an avant-garde filmmaking movement started in 1995 by the Danish directors Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg, who created the "Dogme 95 Manifesto" and the "Vow of Chastity." These were rules to create filmmaking based on the traditional values of story, acting and theme, and excluding the use of elaborate special effects or technology.
This contest is based on this movie style but transformed to photography. Photograph the world as it is in all its simplicity and beauty. Do not overuse technology, special effects and especially, do not make a set up. Don't prepare - just shoot. Here are some rules from the Dogme 95 genre which also apply to this contest:
1. Photographing must be done on location. Props and sets must not be brought in. If a particular prop is necessary for the story, a location must be chosen where this prop is to be found.
2. The camera must be hand-held.
3. Post your photo as it comes out of the camera. No special in-camera effects or post editing is allowed. No studio shots. Both humans and animals are allowed. Dogme 95 on Wikipedia.

friiskiwi: Do we follow all the rules; ( 5 years and 3301 days ago )

UncleJimmy: I would hope so....I will.... ( 5 years and 3301 days ago )
jeaniblog: I think the thumbnail used might be the complete opposite of the theme! ( 5 years and 3301 days ago )
maclu2iaf: I think we need to think about this theme again. This is more into film making not a photography, sorry as far from my knowledge its not in my photography dictionary. One more thing, without post editing and studio shot in another word 'proper setup', its hardly to achieve the objective, not even close to film noir. Anyway it is a very good idea..right now the only thing in my mind is f1.4 ( 5 years and 3301 days ago )
friiskiwi: Agree with Jeani, the thumb, looks rather set up, and is balc and white, looking at the 'rules' cinetext.... it has to be in colour. ( 5 years and 3301 days ago )
Ory: I'm not getting it either, I understand that it should be un-edited and not a set up... but other than that can it be anything? Landscapes? Macros? anything at all? ( 5 years and 3301 days ago )
robvdn: Basicly it is simple: post as is. Compare it to the genre "street photography" (that should ring a bell maclu2aif) but do not arrange your photo (don't move a thing for it because it might be in the way).
The rules as posted in the description count (I'm not the mod of this contest so I can be overruled), not as posted by Friiskiwi (they limit to much, B&W is for instance allowed and normal camera settings too, I just copied the rules as in the description; this way it's not to much limited).
My basic thought behind this idea was: show the beauty as it is out there without pre- and postinterfering. Hope this makes it more clear. ( 5 years and 3301 days ago )
maclu2iaf: yes robvdn, after i read your explainations i think i know whats in your mind..to produce a photo with a movie mood in it but still to follow the those rules...please do correct me if i'm wrong. I think we should allow saturation, brightness & contrast only, these should do to get the color mood..and no cropping & straighten, which these i believed will judge the photographer on handheld and composition skills. I still trying to define what type of photography is this.. but surely it can be done.. ( 5 years and 3301 days ago )
maclu2iaf: cinematography! ( 5 years and 3301 days ago )
MnMCarta: yea I'll probably not be entering this one cause I REALLY am confused at what we are looking for. ( 5 years and 3301 days ago )
adeincyprus: simply put.......shoot what you see, don't beggar about with it in PS or any other suite, just post it here.......... that's how I see it. ( 5 years and 3301 days ago )
kyricom: I agree with what Ade just wrote, but also keep in mind that it's more than that (I think). It's not just lack of technology. It's also about content and "story telling." We don't have the dialogue etc. of actors, so we'll need to convey the story in our content (correct me if I'm wrong - I'm just guessing here). ( 5 years and 3301 days ago )
friiskiwi: Sounds good Mark, guess we are all waiting for somebody to start posting. ( 5 years and 3300 days ago )
jawshoewhah: I was reading this in the suggested contests. But it just seems like PS is NOT allowed, correct? As the photo is shot? ( 5 years and 3300 days ago )
smokebigbird: so can u set ur camera to black n white or sepia before taking the shot,so no post editing ? ( 5 years and 3300 days ago )
kyricom: I don't know Ade... it specifically says "no special in camera effects" ( 5 years and 3300 days ago )
friiskiwi: Seems pretty clear to me, no straightening, no black and whites and no cropping, I also assume it would include no scanning.
AS is when you import it from the camera, I assume, we can 'Save for Web' to reduce the size of the image. ( 5 years and 3300 days ago )
jawshoewhah: I think as long as we save it as it came off the disk, it shouldn't matter if we save it to jpeg, since I have no choice. I can't upload RAW. ( 5 years and 3300 days ago )
karaflazz: Ahahaha....just an other them for us to make 30 comments in each entry / red flag entry's / generally to fight each other.
Good luck guys.I hope you fine a way through this mess!!!!!!

Contest Moderator: - Post your photos "as it is", meaning as it comes out of the camera. No cropping, no straightening; no post editing is allowed.
- in camera black and white is allowed, in camera sepia coloring for instance is considered to be overuse of technology.
- telling a story with your entry is prefered but not mandatory.
- converting RAW to JPG is allowed. ( 5 years and 3300 days ago )
I really like the geometry of this shot - all the different squares and rectangles leading the eye. Reminds me a little of the painting "Nighthawks" by Edward Hopper. It would also make a phenomenal staged shot if you could get rid of everyone but the little girl and do some cropping. But this is cool as it is
I think this is my fav ... it has a very journalistic feel but at the same time it goes beyond that ... the subtle emotion, the lighting and even the centre composition is great!

Definitely well deserved. Congrats on anotehr 1st my friend!
Love it
A common sight we can see everywhere in public transport but when frozen in time it starts to tell it's own story. Just this one shot can fill a book. Are those kids traveling alone? Where are they going or are they coming back? Who's the person next to them? Is the boy on the right just bored or looking for help...
The image raises more question then it answers and that's good.
wonderful, GL
Great moody shot..
Almost scary how the girl looks straight into the camera, don't know why but make me think about the movie "Lost in Translation".
Good one Rob This is a great capture Author
