It is called DOF crystleclear.In this case a shallow DOF!!!

Yes Dimitris is right...at almost 1:1 macro magnification and at f2.8, that DOF will smear everything accept the focus point..

karaflazz and/or author, please explain better: does that mean that a macro of a crystal will never be perfectly on focus? That's very interesting (for those who do not know too much on photography). Thanks!
I'am asking this as I had tried to take this kind of shots and I gave up, the result was far from being perfect.

It's all about F value cocor!
The smaller the F number is ( f.e 1.4 - 1.8 - 2.0 ) the smaller the DOF is.
If author was using a bigger F number (depending of lens F range f :1.8 - 22 some times) he would have a bigger "clear" area.
But that wasn't his intention.
He wanted only the diamond to be visible & the rest of the photo to be blur!!!

While I love this shot... I would like it more if the top of the diamond was more in focus. To me... the most important part of the stone (the top) is blurred. It almost seems (to me) that the setting is the subject not the stone. Maybe if he went one stop higher or focused a tiny bit higher. All in all a great shot.. Best of luck author.

Really Crystle? Yet another one of your comments that is strictly critical and offers no element of value or constructive criticism. If you cannot assist the author with advice on making the photo quality better, then don't say anything at all. Didn't your mother ever teach you that if you can't say anything nice, then don't say anything?

I am new to this photography stuff so I don't have lots to offer as far as advice goes. I am sure that some of the others will offer some more technical advice.
