NOTE!! *** THIS CONTEST SHOULD BE TITLED "RING LIGHTS" and not "Light Rings" Please read the following guidelines CAREFULLY before submitting you entry as there is a difference in the two terms...
They are expensive and most of use can't effort them but there's ways to fake this effect without using Photoshop. In this contest you're going to have to be creative, do some DIY and build your own ring light simulation. There's some helpfull tutorials online like these and these and there are more.
You'll be able to make a fake ring light for a about USD $5.00 and you can always use it later on, hows that for a deal? Goal in this contest is to photograph something (like an eye) which reflects the homemade light of the ring light. One more catch and this is important: you'll have to post a photo of the device you made as a ring light in the SBS. Using a premade and real ring light is considered to be off theme
friiskiwi: more time would have been great for this. ( 5 years and 3229 days ago )
kyricom: We have to MAKE a light ring, or can we simply USE a light ring? ( 5 years and 3229 days ago )
Ory: I predict another high level contest that a week from now will only have 3-4 entries in it, I hope to be proved wrong. ( 5 years and 3229 days ago )
friiskiwi: Mark,
"One more catch and this is important: you'll have to post a photo of the device you made as a ring light in the SBS. Using a premade and real ring light is considered to be off theme"
I will certainly give it a go, if I can find all the bits at a reasonable price. Bet it won't be anywhere the $5 US ( 5 years and 3229 days ago )
robvdn: OK... the title should be RING LIGHTS which is something completely else then LIGHT RINGS... sorry ppl: I (nor any other mod) didn't change the title: don't blame me! My original title was RING LIGHTS. Please read the description if you want to stay on theme! ( 5 years and 3229 days ago )
robvdn: @ORY: this contest is ALL levels ( 5 years and 3229 days ago )
kyricom: oops... guess I should read more closely. ( 5 years and 3229 days ago )
jawshoewhah: So if I decided to duct tape a bunch of Christmas lights into a wreath, obviously jimmy rigged, I use that for my light source and then I take a picture of it? Are LED's our only option? ( 5 years and 3228 days ago )
Contest Moderator: People...Please note this.READ THE GUIDELINES CAREFULLY!!! BEFORE SUBMITTING...this contest is really about RING-LIGHTS and NOT LIGHT RINGS the is a huge difference. Also when posting your entry please ensure to take a photograph of the Home-Made Ring Light and add it to the SBS.
@Jaws...yes, in short answer...if you were to Jerry-rig an acceptable ring light assembly and add it to the SBS, I figure that would be on topic...As long as it's home-made and not a light ready made for purchase (commercial ring light) it should be fine ( 5 years and 3228 days ago )
MnMCarta: You know... I've googled "ring lights" and checked out pictures and makings and stuff and I still don't get this... but I do get that you need to make some kinda round contraption that goes around your lens that has lights but I don't see the difference between the pictures that google showed than using certain kinda lights but this isn't the first contes I haven't been able to do so I'm good. I just take it as a learning experience ( 5 years and 3227 days ago )
Lamantine: That's insane :S ( 5 years and 3226 days ago )
Ory: As soon as we make 1 entry if we use the same light we are not anonymous, I see a couple entries already by the same author for this reason. Can we forgo the anon rule or just 1 entry per ring built? ( 5 years and 3225 days ago )
jawshoewhah: I have a question for the mods. Since we are allowed to enter three times, then that would mean that we would have to use three different light rights, correct? IMO, entering the same ring in the SBS would be the equivalent of entering similar entries. So could a mod please clarify. ( 5 years and 3225 days ago )
friiskiwi: Ory, only Tuesday and already 6 entries. ( 5 years and 3224 days ago )
friiskiwi: Jaws and Ory, I suggest we only enter and SBS for our first entry. ( 5 years and 3224 days ago )
Lamantine: I have a question, as the ring lights must be on the camera lens, that means that members like me who don't have those big cameras cannot enter this contest ? ( 5 years and 3224 days ago )
xynric: can anyone tell me or give me a link on how or where to upload and do this step-by-step guide? pls ( 5 years and 3224 days ago )
robvdn: @Lamantine: it's nowhere writen in the description it has to be ON your camera, as long as you use a homemade ringlight it is a OK. Think creative ( 5 years and 3224 days ago )
friiskiwi: xynric, go to
My Stuff
My entries, you will be able to upload a SBS from there. ( 5 years and 3223 days ago )
xynric: thx for those who help me find where to upload SBS ( 5 years and 3223 days ago )
robvdn: @jawshoewhah: I suppose you can use the same ring light in multiple entries, just make a different SBS (but I'm not the mod of this contest!). ( 5 years and 3223 days ago )
Contest Moderator: The same ringlights are allowed to be used in several entries, it's preferable if you make a different SBS for each but this time it is allowed too to post the same SBS. ( 5 years and 3222 days ago )
gotmeamuse: crap! I painted to many pictures and missed this! ( 5 years and 3221 days ago )
jawshoewhah: Damn I read that way too late. I still had the ring assembled... eh... ( 5 years and 3219 days ago )
Howdie stranger! If you want to participate in this contest, just:
It is home made. It is a tent light, i cutted out the middle of it. Similar result as the linked one in the goal, but i keeped the cover of it: http://www.dansdata.com/ringlight.htm
author says:
But i load up another pic for the doubters.

It is easy jawshoewhah! Just buy a led light like linked before. Take it apart and cut a hole (size it to your objective) on both sides of the cover with any kind of tool, that you can cut plastic with. (I used a blade and a rasp) After you done that, just put the on/off button outside the lamp. You don't have to do anything with it, it's cable is long enough. And you are done! It's a half an hour job! I have no photos of the process, i made this light ring a year ago...

Reminds me of being abducted
Great idea, looks easy..
I guess that counts. If you update your SBS with more description to how you made your light, it would be less confusing.
wonderful effect.
