Square Format is a picture where the image size (width and height) are the same. There is a new trend of photography in this format, and there are whole groups devoted to them. Your mission is to take an interesting picture, and then if you have to you can crop it to create a square photograph. What's in the picture is up to you, but because this is an open theme you will probably have to work extra hard for it to stand out. Here is one group that specializes in square formats. Good luck.
Required level: 5+ or higher. Status: finished. Check out the winners below!
magicsteve: I guess in this case it's "hip to be square." :P Nice contest! ( 5 years and 3253 days ago )

jawshoewhah: So as long as the photo is square, it's on theme???? Sounds like a pretty open theme. ( 5 years and 3253 days ago )
bandit69: Odd such a format is so popular...I prefer 16:9 ratio myself, or close to it. ( 5 years and 3253 days ago )
UncleJimmy: it's actually been around for a long, long time...a throw-back to the old studio film 2 1/4 format cameras that were used by many a portrait and wedding photographer... ( 5 years and 3253 days ago )
CMYK46: Big deal. Square, schmare. Just another fad. ( 5 years and 3253 days ago )
adeincyprus: hardly a fad cmyk, did you not read itsmymoment's post up there.... ( 5 years and 3253 days ago )
EmiK: Sorry I thought this was a new trend. How long has this format been around? Well at least it's new to pxleyes = ) And yes lots of freedom here, hope you guys will have fun with this one. I always thought that pictures look better in squares. ( 5 years and 3253 days ago )
bandit69: I do like the fredom with this. To be creative, or do my favorites. hmm. ( 5 years and 3253 days ago )
jawshoewhah: I'm thinking the real creativity behind this contest is finding the subject matter that better fits within a square, as opposed to a rectangle.
I definitely see over a 100 entries in this contest. ( 5 years and 3253 days ago )
jeaniblog: or more....? ( 5 years and 3252 days ago )
Contest Moderator: Please read this line in the description very well: "Square Format is a picture where the image size (width and height) are the same."
Somehow this seems to wrong at some entries. ( 5 years and 3249 days ago )
kyricom: I think you're right Josh. ANY photo can be made square, but only some will actually look better that way. ( 5 years and 3249 days ago )
UncleJimmy: According to my research....Kodak first produced 101 roll film in the square format of 3.5 x 3.5 inch in 1895 and discontinued it in 1956, the format of 2.25 x 2.25 square film was introduced in 1900 and is still manufactured currently. The most notable and popular "square format" photographs are the famous Polaroid photos...although the entire frame is not square, the actual image contained on the Polaroid IS square...1970 to current.... Wonderful shot, just a suggestion though....I would really have liked to see this with the face in the center and framed by all of the flowers...I think this might make for a more balanced 'square photo'...just a thought
