It's a small flashlight standing straight up directly underneath a white sheet of plastic with the chesspiece on top.

ahh, plastic that's why it didn't illuminate the same way I was thinking it would under paper.

I did look at the image as a whole, and decided it was better this way.......it was the light I was wanting to capture, to emphasis the contents.

I thought the same thing friiskiwi. Possibly if they were all clear crystals, but the colored throw it off. This would have been a really really nice photo as it was without gems.

Actually I believe fiber optics work by a light source underneath and the normally "clear" fibers take on the character of the light transmitted through them...the fibers only appear to glow and are not technically in and of themselves a light source.

itsmymoment ,that is correct, they look like clear plastic tubes but have a small lit tip and color wheel on the bottom which illuminates the plastic through reflection.
