red and blue ink... (5 years and 3059 days ago)
Awesome idea and shot... it's too bad it is out of focus on the impact point. Drops are a favorite of mine and I know how hard it was to get even this. You got time... try again and resubmit. Colors are fantastic. What was your flash set at? 1/32?
this Picture was made with an exposure time of 1/100sec. The flash i used was a simple metz 36 and 2 pices of work spot light.... the focus was verry difficuld to get because ma girlfind dropped the ink by hand in the pot. The f-stop was 6,3 and the focal length was 300mm (with an Tamrom 28-300mm Macro objektiv)..
I think your shutter speed is probably too slow. Try pre-focusing on the spot that you expect the drops to land and maybe once your focused, move it over to manual focus. I think this is s really great attempt and I really like the smokey looking effect
I think the shutter speed it fine. It is actually the flash that should be catching the action. I would bump the f-stop up though to get more dof. If you do that you will need more light of course. I use two flashes set a 1/32 and reflect off of a light colored background. My f-stops are around 20. I am also using a 100mm L macro lens too.
Author... I read the description of the contest:
"What happens if you drop milk into water? Or paint, dye, grease... Right, they form flows of 2 (or more) different colored liquids mixing up. This contest is about photographing these flows"
I think you actually did a great job here. By mistake or not you are showing (in focus) the "flows" of the pink and blue. Bravo! I would keep it and shoot some more with different colors.
^^ yes youre right.. i don't recognized it this way..
i will try some more shots in the next time with lower f-stops. I'm looking forword to upload the best pics

Detergent into water (red bowl) (5 years and 3059 days ago)
Are you using a dedicated macro lens or are you cropping down?
Nah macro lenses are too expensive for someone like me . +4 Hoya Close up lens on a 70-210mm lens (I think I was at 210...), this photo was not cropped. I kinda wished I had it a bit lower though.
ahhh ok, that would account for it being a bit soft. Still a great capture though. You also have a bit of motion blur on the drop itself, what was the power setting on your flash?
Oh I do my water droplets quite differently than normal. I set my camera to 1 second exposure and then I use an old external flash (Minolta Auto 200x) to manually flash (so like the test button). Its a hassle to set up (and to press 2 buttons in a certain order) but I liked the results so far and it allows me to control where my flash is. My power setting for my flash is at low since I can adjust how bright my image is by simply bring my flash farther or closer to the subject and it saves power (and faster recyclinng time!).
