No...not portraits of the environment. Environmental portraits are portraits taken outside of the studio, in an environment that says something about or relates to your subject. By "on location" or "environmental" portraits I mean portraits taken of people in a situation that they live in (work, rest or play) and/or a place that says something about who they are.
As portraits, they have the same 'quality' as studio shots..they contain good lighting, a posed subject and are a portrait by definition.
Different is the fact that they are not done in a studio, they are not snapshots, and they are not candid or "Street Photography"
A great explanation and guide to Location or Environmental portraits can be found here.
Please follow these "Don'ts" for the purpose of this contest: No wedding photography, no candids/street photography, no studio shots, no animal shots and lastly...no shots of photographers shooting "on location"
The idea is to do a formal portrait of your subject in a location that relates something about the person you are shooting...
Required level: 10+ or higher. Status: finished. Check out the winners below!
Contest Moderator: OK People: seems we have some confusion as to what a "Portrait" is....a portrait by definition is a photo of a person in which the subject is somehow engaged with the viewer...most often through eye contact, also it does also differ from candid/ street photography in that the subject is formally posed: ALL entries that appear as candids or street photography will be removed. This is vague, incoherent, and somewhat of a joke. ( 5 years and 3004 days ago )
UncleJimmy: Actually, I don't find it vague in the least bit...somewhat short, simple and to the point. It clearly (IMHO) shows the difference in location portraits and studio portraits...if your subject is a firefighter for instance, then a pose...read POSE next to fire equipment, possibly along with tools of their trade...that IS an environmental portrait....a quick shot of the same firefighter in the studio (not on location) or simply a street or news type shot is not a portrait. I don't get what's so hard to understand about this theme??? A teacher, posed in front of a blackboard or next to his/her desk...portrait. A chemist, dressed up next to lab equipment. The list goes on...a truckdiver posing next to his pride & joy (his rig)...But the key here is formal portrait....not street photography or candid's where the subject is totally unaware they are the subject! Howdie stranger! If you want to participate in this contest, just:
CMYK, it's NOT a candid for the first reason, the subject is clearly engaged with both the photographer and the viewer through eye contact. She is clearly aware she is posing for a photo. second, if she is a tour guide in the country, it's clearly not a studio shot...
Hrmmmmm... who could this be by? Nice shot. Follows the theme well
Nicely done author, excellent environmental portrait
