Kales Castle of Lassithi: Kales Fortress is a hallmark of the town of Ierapetra. The Venetians built Kales Fortress on the northern sea wall of the port, to look out for enemy ships and protect the harbour from the Arab pirates. This castle is believed to have been built on the site of an old fortress and that the Venetians reinforced it. The fortress of Kales is a remnant of its time, its massive yet simple structure was made of stone without many adornments or decorative work. (5 years and 2972 days ago)

The Roman Colosseo, aged 1939 years, is one of those monuments that just throw you back in history. I love looking at people who first see it: big eyes, open mouth and an “Oh my God!” sigh.
It is the biggest Roman amphitheatre. Actually it represented part of the common strategy* of Roman emperors to offer their citizens “panem et circenses”. In other words, give people bread and games and you’ll avoid problems. If they wanted to save their lives, gladiators were forced to fight other slaves or ferocious beasts in front of an the audience of the 50,000 persons the Colosseo could contain. Incredible engineering techniques were used to surprise the audience. Just imagine the 80 elevators used to let gladiators and animals reach the scene at the same time. Just think of how many people had to pull the ropes so as to lift each elevator and the perfect direction needed for such… live shows.
I must not forget to tell you the monument was as high as a 17 floor building: 52 metres.

* I would say this strategy did not change a lot from the year 72 until our days… :-)

The Lanterna, symbol of Genoa and most important lighthouse of the city, is a 77-metre-high tower, made of two blocks, square in section, roughly of the same height, and both with a projecting terrace.
Built on a rock of 40 metres of height, the top of the Lanterna stands therefore at 117 metres above the sea level. Its light is visible from more than 50 kilometres away.
The Lanterna has welcomed vessels and boats and guided them into the harbour for centuries. The Lanterna, as we see it today, was built in 1543; unofficial sources, however, date back to 1128 the building on this site of the first tower intended to assist navigators.

Today visitors can climb 172 steps, reach the first terrace (76 m above the sea level), and enjoy the breathtaking view of the port and the old city. (5 years and 2971 days ago)
