Kowhai are small, woody legume trees in the genus Sophora native to New Zealand. Kowhai trees grow throughout the country and are a common feature in New Zealand gardens.

The name kowhai comes from the Maori word for yellow—a reference to the colour of the flower.

They usually flower in spring and nearly all my photos of flowering Kowhai are taken in September or October, so I was delighted to find this one on a walk earlier this week.
