The Australian Pied Oystercatcher is an endangered species, and usually very shy. I managed to get quite close and watch the mum trying to teach the youngster to catch worms. The mum would push her beak right down into the sand, wriggle it around a bit and more often than not pull out a worm. The youngster tried too, but then he'd go and eat the ones mum gave him.
