Flags waving, leaves rustling, kites flying, fur ruffling, hair streaming, umbrellas inside-out ... Whatever the subject, show us the wind in action! Must be NATURAL wind. NOT artificial wind or breezes caused by a fan or people blowing.
meatman: Are birds on theme ?? What about airplanes ?? ( 5 years and 2408 days ago )
friiskiwi: I can imagine some birds being on theme, but not air planes, but that's only my opinion. ( 5 years and 2408 days ago )
meatman: Another perplexing puzzle wrapped in an enigma and a paradox. You said: "some birds being on theme". If one bird is on theme, all birds aloft should be on theme. And if birds are on theme, thus aircraft should also be. IMO, birds in flight do not depict wind, and thus should not be on theme. That's just my own personal opinion. ( 5 years and 2408 days ago )
meatman: As an afterthought, birds that are flying do not need wind at all. ( 5 years and 2408 days ago )
kyricom: Actually, I would respectfully disagree. An average bird flying along may not be on theme as they do not need the wind, but there are birds that "soar" and just let the wind take them miles without ever flapping their wings once. Those I would (just personally) consider on theme. ( 5 years and 2407 days ago )
meatman: You are killing me !! I am well aware of soaring birds, riding thermals and such. But a bird riding a thermal sure is not showing me "wind in action". Incidentally, FYI, thermals are not even wind as such, just rising air currents caused by temperature changes. Now, if yee show me a pic of a birdie on his tree limb, with his plumage getting blown out by gale force winds, I'll buy it. Just my humble opinion. I don't wanna ruffle anyone's feathers. ( 5 years and 2406 days ago )
meatman: The thermal wind is a vertical shear in the geostrophic wind caused by a horizontal temperature gradient. Its name is a misnomer, because the thermal wind is not actually a wind, but rather a wind shear. OUCH, kyricom !! ( 5 years and 2406 days ago )
kyricom: Let's see... in your last comment you described "wind" five ways. Thanks ( 5 years and 2405 days ago )
meatman: That's "wiki" fer yee !! They love overkill. The only part of their description that reflects on this banter is "thermal wind is not actually a wind". And you are quite welcome. I am always glad to enlighten folks. ( 5 years and 2405 days ago )
meatman: And wiki "used" the word "wind" 5 times. They did not describe wind 5 ways. And actually they did not describe wind. They gave their description of "thermal wind". Are yee feeling the "enlightment" just aflowing here ?? And yur welcome again. ( 5 years and 2405 days ago )
kyricom: Which is why I tell my students to NEVER use Wiki as a source - because it isn't a legitimate one. Lehigh University points out that "Wind forms when the sun heats one part of the atmosphere differently than another part. This causes expansion of warmer air, making less pressure where it is warm than where it is cooler. Air always moves from high pressure to lower pressure, and this movement of air is wind." Thermals ARE a form of wind. There is also Catabolic wind - when cool air (which falls because heat rises) goes down in a valley etc. Don't be hatin' on thermals - it IS a form of wind. ( 5 years and 2405 days ago )
meatman: The following 2 paragraphs were not created by me. This is from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Dept. of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, (and these folks are not wiki. They are experts in their field): The vertical change in geostrophic wind is called the geostrophic vertical shear. Since the geostrophic vertical shear is directly proportional to the horizontal temperature gradient, it is also called the Thermal Wind
So the Thermal wind is not an actual wind, but a the difference between two winds at different levels. Those were all are their words not mine. That includes that last sentence about thermals not being an actual wind. Don't shot the messenger here. I am just stating facts. IMO, birds in flight do not show me wind in action. I am not going to change your opinion. And you will not change mine. You will toss it off as semantics. And I will toss it off as scientific fact. It is what it is. ( 5 years and 2405 days ago )
meatman: http://www.aos.wisc.edu/~aalopez/aos101/wk12.html ( 5 years and 2405 days ago )
kyricom: So, let's see... the geostrophic vertical shear is called the "Thermal Wind," which is the "difference between two winds." Got it. Thanks. ( 5 years and 2405 days ago )
meatman: Whew !! Glad ya finally got it. Ya had me worried for a minute. No hard feelings. ( 5 years and 2405 days ago )
kyricom: heh heh... yep, I appreciate you showing us all that it's wind ( 5 years and 2405 days ago )
meatman: Yur killing me. Who's "us all" ?? I have got 5 PM's from some of them "us all's" that are totally in agreement with me. One is a mod. But, it is what it is. ( 5 years and 2405 days ago )
kyricom: Hrmmmm... oh yeah? Well I'VE got 20 PMs and one is the President! ( 5 years and 2405 days ago )
meatman: Oop"s !!! My bad. Its 6 PM's. From some of them "us alls ". ( 5 years and 2405 days ago )
meatman: I would imagine the president did. Look at the sorry mess he has us in !! He would pee on your leg and tell ya its raining. ( 5 years and 2405 days ago )
meatman: You are starting to stutter and repeat youself. Stop that. Regain your composure. . ( 5 years and 2405 days ago )
kyricom: ohhhhhh, yes! I'd MUCH rather have President Bush back! That way, he could have you waterboarded and tell you it's raining. ( 5 years and 2404 days ago )
meatman: hmmm. that was a good one !!! ( 5 years and 2404 days ago )
Blowin' In The Wind
How many roads must a man walk down
Before you can call him a man?
How many seas must a white dove sail
Before she can sleep in the sand?
Yes and how many times must cannonballs fly
Before they're forever banned?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind
Yes and how many years can a mountain exist
Before it's washed to the seas (sea)
Yes and how many years can some people exist
Before they're allowed to be free?
Yes and how many times can a man turn his head
Pretend that he just doesn't see?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind
Yeah and how many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
Yes and how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?
Yes and how many deaths will it take till he knows
That too many people have died
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind? ( 5 years and 2402 days ago )
Chrys Rizzo: So... the answer my friends... is blowing in the wind.... the answer is blowin'in the wind.... ( 5 years and 2402 days ago )

Nice catch! The sober colors give it an extra chilly effect, well done! Good luck!
thanks
Wonderful photo, did you get a chance to the aurora borealis while you were in Iceland?
thank you, unfortunately no aurora borealis on that trip - maybe next time. i seen it before and it a stunning experience
Amazing photo!
thanks
Gorgeous photo and horse! Nicely composed.
appreciated
Awesome!
thanks
wow. nice!
thanks a lot
This is a WONDERFUL picture, but I'm not sure it's evidencing the wind. Any horse tossing its neck can look like that.
Next someone will be accusing the author of being on the horses back with a portable fan blowing the mane hither and yon !!!
Or maybe in front of the nag with a high powered, industrial strength vacuum cleaner.
Or the horses hair is stiffened by starch, per chance ??
you guessed it - took a while to get it done
Lovely color & clarity! DOF is beautiful!!
many thanks
Very nice and deserved. Nice week for you!
