Yes, instead of having the pieces within the squares, the pieces "sit" on the intersections. There is also a "river" in the middle separating the two armies. An "elephant" piece cannot cross the river, hence the old Chinese idiom "An elephant flying across the river", meaning doing something against the rules of proper behavior. The red piece at the bottom is a "horse" or a "Knight" and the top red is a "chariot" or a "Rook" To the left of the bottom red horse is a pawn. The black "king" or "general" is the top most piece.
