Hi Author, I live in a place where we don't see anything like this, in the middle of winter we might get a thin layer of ice on the water troughs. I just.... can you please explain ... the top layer of ice, it looks like it is around 30 cm or so above the lower layer. It's a great shot, I'm just scratching my head.

Well, I am not an expert, but all I can say: This happens sometimes in Springtime in the Arctic North (btw, I only work there but not live). it is a very small lake along the road. The snow started to melt during the day under the bushes created some stream and during the night it got frozen again.
