This is a railroad Brakeman's lantern from the mid-1890's. "Red Light Districts" got their names because brothels weren't built in the best parts of town, but often were down by the railroad yards. Workers on the trains (as well as others, obviously) would patronize the brothels when the trains pulled in. It was common for the brakemen to leave their lanterns (with their red lights) lined up on the porches, so you could see a whole district lit up in red. (5 years and 1156 days ago)
"The Alien" would have been a good title for this. Then I would be looking for a monster here instead of dinner. I see a monster. Either way, you did get my attention.
