The (in)famous "Red Light Districts" in America were usually "on the wrong side of the tracks." They got that name because when the trains stopped for a little while, the brakemen would go to the houses of ill repute and leave their brake lanterns on the porch, lighting the area in red light. This is a brakeman's lantern from the early 1900's. (5 years and 627 days ago)
