I'm sure I have seen this before, or one like it. Was it before the crash?
I think the author pressed real light bulbs in the sand, removed them.. and placed lighted switches in the impression then took the picture.. that's my theory..hehehe.. loved to know the method

Drivenslush is almost right. Only the light are made by those little birthdaycake candles sticked completely into the sand.
Was my own idea, during some practical lesson.

Wonderful, will have to try this some time. Thanks for sharing. How dark was it when you did it.
Dark room only spotlight from the side to create the shadows.
(holding your camera too long above candles is not a good idea 
)
High ISO to have short shuttertime
