wonderful detail, but I'm not too sure about the cropping.
Yes, I've agonized over the cropping. First the forehead chop. I found that reducing the "length" of his forehead seemed to emphasize his melancholic eyes more and therefore draws the viewer into the picture. And instead of the obvious / traditional tight facial cropping to fill up the whole frame, I've opted to show the whole orange collar and some shirt. This firstly was because it complement his skin tone and secondly, it gave some context as to the "blue-collar" nature of his work which would have been quite a job to have to maintain that beard. Lastly, I believe the overall cropping ended with a very personable image of a kind looking face.
BTW, this was taken hand-held standing about 6 feet away. The wonderful power of a manual-focusing 50mm, f1.4 lans.
Thanks, the fast 50mm lens is a great lens, I have been considering it.
Very nice. I like your explanation of the crop, but still think I might have done what you did but crop some off the right to make it more vertical. Good shot though. I LOVE my 50mm 1.4 (Pentax DA*)
Thanks kyricom. That was how he sat, very tired after a day's work, so I left it at that. I hope this honors all men & women who do a hard day's work for a decent living rather than taking the easy way out by going criminal.
