Good eyes to see this. If you cropped a tad tighter (at viewer's right) and up a bit more your focus would have been stronger on the shadows. Looks like it was a photo op kind of day for you.

Yes, I like it better, don't you? More focus on the shadows and less distraction for our eyes.
I just looked at it again...clip in a touch more at your right to eliminate that telltale shadow of the rider ahead. Just make sure it looks right to you...and always take what reviewers tell you with a grain of salt.
You are right..It's a mistake I often make.. Put too many things in a picture
