It became evident to me as the morning hour dawned that I shouldn't have put that burning candle so close to the drapes at the front window. The night that began as dark and stormy rapidly turned to flaming and steamy.

That's too bad. It looks like it was a nice house.

author says:

Yes, it was. Even in this condition, it's listed for over $2 million. The property is on the water.

author says:

Abandoned buildings (mostly houses) are a great interest of mine. I love capturing their stark beauty and sadness. Some great old houses are left behind to the elements and this is so sad. I'd love to restore them to their past glory.

The day after Hurricane George hit Key West, I came across this woman who just lost her home. (5 years and 3174 days ago)

No Jaw's do you see it in my portfolio?

Rangers [banned] says:

Hi author this is a sad photo I know a lot of people that have been hit by a Hurricane, however this says to me disaster not Poverty OMI, Good Luck

avatar jawshoewhah
jawshoewhah [banned] says:

No I didn't, but maybe it was in a previous contest that it was removed.

Oh, well....

avatar jawshoewhah
jawshoewhah [banned] says:

Oh and even thought rangers is a noobie, I kind of agree with him.

avatar agthakurtas

agrees with ranger.......

avatar CrystleClear

agree with ranger, she does not look starving author..

avatar kyricom
kyricom says:

Yes, having lived through hurricanes I absolutely agree that it is a huge tragedy if you're hit by one. But it doesn't necessarily denote poverty. I agree with ranger

author says:

, this woman lost her home, she had no where to go, the red cross was helping her.I WOULD CONSIDER this to be poverty. When you are left homeless by a tragedy, are you not poverty stricken?

avatar kyricom
kyricom says:

If Bill Gates' home was knocked down by a tornado, it would be tragic, but it wouldn't make him poor

author says:

This woman was not Bill gates, she had nothing but a home to begin with,no family to help her. she was left with nothing, so IMO that is "poor"

avatar rbsgrl
rbsgrl says:

I think it may be both, poverty and tragedy. Look at the house, its smaller than most homes, looks run down so she may have been poor to begin with. But I guess that would be spectulation. As for crystalclear's comment, are you saying this distrought woman is too heavy not to be hungry? Maybe this the beginning of her poverty. Just my opinion.

author says:

I know for a fact that this woman was left homeless. I was at the time working as a photojournalist for the newspaper. The red cross steps in when you have no place left to turn.

avatar kyricom
kyricom says:

Look... you can't be TOO poor if you can afford (any type of) a home on the water in the Florida Keys

avatar Ory
Ory says:

My entries get removed from time to time, and I believe the phrase used by the moderators is:
"Unfortunately any entry that is even considered slightly off theme by members has to be removed to avoid arguments."
That alone suggests removal of this entry is the right move.

avatar Ory
Ory says:

Ah here we go;
"Keep in mind that we have to remove everything that is considered even slightly off-theme to avoid unnecessary argues after the contest ends."
With the number of members who are commenting saying that this is off theme then at minimum it must be considered "slightly off-theme." Sorry Author, wonderful shot, another contest will come up for it to fit into.

author says:

I am tired of this B.S..

avatar jawshoewhah
jawshoewhah [banned] says:

Ory... Like that rule is enforced

I lost count of how many entries that the general public thinks might be off theme but still stick.

I do think this entry should stay, because it looks like she's destined to poverty, whether or not she was before. But it wouldn't hurt to straiten your horizon.

avatar EmiK
EmiK says:

It's weird but I feel like I've seen this shot too, in dramatic weather contest, but I looked and it's not there. Oh well, it is an interesting capture though.

avatar jawshoewhah
jawshoewhah [banned] says:

I KNEW it wasn't just me!! Maybe it was in the news worthy contest. Probably by another photographer behind the author at the same scene. It could happen

author says:

This shot was in the newspapers.

avatar k5683
k5683 says:

I honestly think the quality of the photo is not the best. Quality of the photo, whether on theme or not should still be good right?

avatar friiskiwi
friiskiwi says:

good point k5683, something we at times seem to forget, I also feel I have seen this before..

author says:

...seems so sad to me that there are only two people out of all the negative that can actually "feel" something from this photo. The rest of you are to busy tearing it apart

avatar cabldawg71

I can feel her pain Author, I lost a house to fire and everything i owned with it. Although I looked very healthy, I was flat broke, homeless and no where to turn. The Red Cross got us a motel room for a few days and fed us but we where indeed poverty stricken for quite a long time after.
Why do you people always have to tear it up? This gal is not Bill Gates obviously and it is no comparison. Comments that are negative, is against the rules but you continue to ignore it. Flag it and be done.
Do you get some kind of orgasmic sensation out of this? just critique the image, vote flag and move on.
Now I can wait for your nasty little rebuttals :P
