Ah, thank you, solkee! No, the old dog that I am, I knew nothing about it. Finally yes, I guess long before that. Grrrr, that friiski knows almost everything, darn it!

I think this might have been better in color, to help show the depth. In black and white, the roots look somewhat "flat" and nondescript.

For me, black and white is most effective when there are strong visual contrasts. Grays just all tend to blend together.

You maybe right, MossyB, but I was fooled by the fact that it looked a bit spooky, which, for some reason, I liked.

That's the point, it's hard to see or appreciate the "spooky" in black and white, it just kind of looks like a big gray mass.
