by Robert Warren in 1955 - the story of a girl loved by her father, but after his death learns that her mother was a slave. She is sold into slavery and lives in New Orleans during the Civil War. She marries a Union officer after the war is over, but even then is not 100% happy. This is a very dramatic story of self-exploration, especially for women in one of the US's most trying periods.
