Edinburgh Castle is historically the principal royal fortress of Scotland since at least the reign of David I in the 12th century. Mary Queen of Scots gave birth to James VI, King of Scotland on 19 June 1566 at the castle. In 1603 James acceded to the throne of England unifying both Scotland and England under one monarch. The Honours of Scotland (Scotland's crown jewels) and the Stone of Destiny (the Coronation Stone) are kept at Edinburgh Castle. (5 years and 2874 days ago)
