We had a family reunion and worked together to compose a bunch of these with different themes. The music notes were painted with a flashlight. Its staged yes but it does have traces of light. We used about a 30 second long shutter speed. (5 years and 2902 days ago)

Thank you! There was a lot of trial and error in figuring out ISO, shutter speed and such.

Great idea ... Just a little thing to say : The two people on the ground shouldn't have been cuted. You should have include them entirely in the frame.

author says:

too late to fix it. It was a tough shoot. The guy playing the guitar had to move to the ground within the 30 seconds, after the music notes were painted.

avatar meatman
meatman says:

NICE !! IMPRESSIVE TO THE MAX !! !! how did ya keep the 3 subjects motionless during the 30 seconds ?? and were all the notes "painted" by one person during the 30 seconds ??

avatar meatman
meatman says:

and is the guy watching the guitar player also the guitar player? also why is the girls leg transparent ?? this is one freaky piece of visual art indeed. good luck on this

Is this a true photo or is it photoshopped? Trying to figure out how you did that. lol

author says:

Nope, its not photoshopped. Kinda nice to have confused a few with this. What we did was use a timer with an open shutter. While the shutter was open we had a person in charge of the flashlights, one would paint over the guy playing the guitar. we would then turn off the flashlight and paint the music notes, and finally, once they were done, we had the guitar player and his wife sit down and we ran the light over them. The legs weren't supposed to be transparent however any movement or too much light could have caused this. I assure everyone, its one photo, taken at one time.

author says:

Also the subjects only needed to remain motionless while the light was on.

tried to make single person appear at two or three places in a single pic using long exposure, but never got it such excellent contrast and sharpness of both the instances. Perfect lighting and exposure. Nice Work....

A mare and her foal enjoy a nice day of grazing on a farm in Oregon.

I took this picture with a Nikon D5000 and a telephoto lens. I cropped this photo using iPhoto, but no other editing was done. (5 years and 2965 days ago)

The fence is a bit distracting.

avatar MossyB
MossyB says:

Short of magically making the fence disappear, this is a nice photo.

whith the fence gone it would be oof. was the idea to have the fence the focal point?

avatar FallingHorse

There is a way to shoot through mesh fences so that the fence does not appear - I have used the method a number of times in crocodile enclosures and emus etc using shallow DOF and longer zoom - if it's OK to post links then you can check here:

http://www.shutterphoto.net/article/take-advantage-of-depth-of-field-to-make-things-disappear

Just thought it might be useful. The picture isn't the best for this example and you can use auto focus if you prefer to manual focus like the writer stated

If this contest was for fences, it would have been O.K. apart from the fact that it is a little too dark, IMO

avatar enblanco
enblanco says:

Nice image, very poetic for a farm pictures contest, good luck!

author says:

With this Photo I intentionally left the fence in focus, because I felt it added to the affect. I have others without the fence and don't like them nearly as much.

author says:

I appreciate the input and suggestions though, thank you!

Lovely photograph, love the soft colours and the whole feel of this photo. If it was my photo, I would have cropped a little more off the foreground, which IMO would put even more focus on the mushrooms.

author says:

I have cropped as suggested..

avatar MossyB
MossyB says:

The crop really helped this image be even more impressive. The subtle colors of the log in the foreground is impressive, and the focal depth is spot on, with just enough of the image being crystal clear, without too much blur. The toadstools look like they could be animated, with happy little faces. Well done!

avatar friiskiwi
friiskiwi says:

Still a great photo, but now I think you have cropped too much.

author says:

I kinda like this crop..
