I believe the term for this is "telephoto compression", it makes distant and close object appear "closer" together, also known as the telephoto-effect...a high quality tele-lens will most certainly get that level of detail on the moon if the proper exposure is used. IMO this appears genuine as I have seen other examples of this type of moon shot on other sites that specialize in asto-photography. some of the space shots pulled off by "normal" cameras is astounding...

One day you go to a garden centre and buy two tiny kiwi plants because you would love to have fruit in your garden. You carefully plant, water, nourish and cuddle them. One year passes. Then another one, two, three... Nothing. No fruit. And then, seven years after one morning your kiwi pergola is full of flowers. The next month of December you watch your crop. What an emotion! Momvera, the flowers are white and look like small roses (5 petals). Search for "kiwi flower" on google if you want to see them. Ciao! Ade, I know but that day it was windy and I spent a lot of time to make a still shot. This is the best I could do..,
