If you can re-shoot try this...
Use "spot metering" in your cameras metering mode & if i am right the walls & the roof will magically "disappear".
The + (cross) on your viewfinder or screen must be on the lamp so the camera gets light only from the "spot" you want it to!!!
Play with the exposure time to keep the cable visible (the lamp will be visible anyway).
That way this would look more "realistic" with out those "nasty" walls & roof.

Thanks very much for the advice, unfortunately I wont be able to re-shoot this one cause it was my old apartment. But that's useful advice for the future
