I believe the term for this is "telephoto compression", it makes distant and close object appear "closer" together, also known as the telephoto-effect...a high quality tele-lens will most certainly get that level of detail on the moon if the proper exposure is used. IMO this appears genuine as I have seen other examples of this type of moon shot on other sites that specialize in asto-photography. some of the space shots pulled off by "normal" cameras is astounding...

EDIT: now seeing who the author is...I'm now CERTAIN it's not a fake...they wouldn't do that IMO...

In Japan they say there's a rabit on the moon... here in Brazil we say that a dragon eats the moon (that's why we have half moon...), and St. George fights it every night... And there, what do you see or say about the moon?
