by Robert Warren in 1955 - the story of a girl loved by her father, but after his death learns that her mother was a slave. She is sold into slavery and lives in New Orleans during the Civil War. She marries a Union officer after the war is over, but even then is not 100% happy. This is a very dramatic story of self-exploration, especially for women in one of the US's most trying periods. Thanks. If you look carefully, you can see the sinuosity of The Young Ladies of Avignon here just as they appeared in Picasso's great work, and even some similarity in color scheme as well.
