Took this photo on November 11th, 2012. Tripod and long exposure at 15 deg below zero. Arctic oil field.

A wooden or stone b/g would make this even better (since this is old stuff).
Try to "complete" your composition with the best b/g or items you can find to give the right mood next time.
Did you use 2 light sources?If yes try with only one just to see the result.
A low key technique would be better for this type of composition IMHO.

Thank you both. Look,karaflazz, the oil lamp is anything but old. I bought it the other day for just five euros. About the lighting you are right, and I realized it was pretty harsh, though only after it was too late. The good thing with me is that, at long last, I came to realize what it takes for producing good images of that sort. Hopefully I'd be able to do a little better before I die, hehe. To your question, I used two flat flashlights, but I still don't quite know how the heck to position them in relation with the object I want to light.
