I broke matches up into 3 or 4 pieces and removed the ends for the "wood" in the holder on the right side and then piled more pieces of matches up for the fire. I actually had some ashes left over from my wood stove that I placed under the matches so it looked a bit more real. The grill is about 2x2 inches
