That of the Doge (Genoese Duxe [1]) was, from 1339 to 1797 constituted a central figure of power in the ancient Republic of Genoa.
The first doge (duke or king and sovereign prince) perpetual elected office (even if it does not really prove that then in fact), Simon Boccanegra was called to that office by popular acclaim, December 23, 1339
