What is going on with the letters? Why do they go past the cracks?
That is something you are gonna have to ask a stonemason. I can only presume its because the lettering was not engraved but rather added onto the slab, as in a separate material. I found this in my local cemetary, it's a large plot with one gravestone standing up, and this broken stone on the ground right next to it still within the plot puzzled back together by someone.

Beautiful, you can almost feel it.
It's been in a sealed plastic bag since 1999 and it's cedar....the smell is like grandmother's old cedar chest.
