Omg! I saw this on big bang theory! Amazing experiment and wonderful way to approach the "speaker" photo theme! Well done!
Of course YOU would do that. shoulda known.
Lol, well I'm glad to know I'm not the only dork who watches that show! (although I am probably the only one dorky enough to go through the trouble to figure out how to do this just for one photo) We had a blast playing with this stuff tonight Although I now have blue half congealed "stuff" all over my studio!
great shot, but please explain for us NON Dorks how you did this.
I believe it can be done with a mixture of baking powder and water, where its mixed quite thick to give it solidity in a gooey sort of fashion. I do belive that there is some different ways of achieving that effect with different mixtures. When the music is playing, it causes the liquid-ish solid to "dance" with the vibration created by the speakers.
I think I would have covered stuff with saran wrap to eleviate some of your mess, as it can be quite a chore to clean up.
Jade has the basic idea, it's corn starch. when mixed with water to a certain consistancy (think cake batter) it takes on properties of both a solid and a liquid. If gentle pressure is applied an object will pass easially through it but if hard enough pressure is applied it will block anything from passing. check out this video

oh btw I had drop cloths down but it still got all over
Corn startch! *doh* I knew that baking powder thing was prob wrong. I had baking soda down, but then erased it. no matter! Nice to see this image anyway....its likely the most creative way to showcase a speaker!
Wow! Thanks author for such a knowledge...
Great image BTW GL
very nice effect with the fluid == lighting is very nice as well
this is cool but curious as to why the headphones are there dangling above it? Isn't a subwoofer a speaker itself? I am seriously asking this question because I know nothing about sound systems--my ears are bad enough, I don't need music or tv any louder than it is
Looks like the author added the headphones to the speaker shot (which shouldn't be illegal) to add greater depth, since the contest specifies there has to be a depth of field to be on theme. So far, it's the only entry with any depth to the point that it's still on theme. But only kind of. It's still a cool effect and all but is it blurry enough in the background?
Josh has it partly right, I added the headphones for two reasons:
1st for the reason Josh stated
2nd because I didn't want there to be any argument as to whether or not a speaker was the object of focus.
@ Josh, the background is completely OOF, the guidelines state that it needs to be blurry I guess I didn't know there was supposed to be a certain level of blurriness.
Yeah, well it's still on theme though. So GL!
I love this shot, we all knew who took this shot before voting . Truly awesome work as always!
brilliant
Well, I think very few of us can compete with you Author. The shot is great but it makes me feel I'm fighting against wind mills.
Beware! I'll sharpen my toothpick...
Oh my! Where did you get an idea like this! very well done! Congrats!
Howdie stranger!
