If the background is not a part of the logo I think you should skip it. And if it is - it´s a littlle to much. Just the P and the text will do fine. Like the P btw.
I created this during learning illustrator, inspire by designs found at http://99designs.com/people/ulahts/folio . There is no specific tutorial for it. All learnt and created by experimenting with vector shapes, gradient and transperency clip masking.
Not bad, but in your step 1 I see a side which implies thickness for the half sphere. I completely miss that in the final entry. I think with that side you create more depth, which can be nice for this icon. Up to you if you want that. Good luck!
Personally I think the text distracts from the icon, plus it doesn't add anything as it merely repeats what you've already told us in the title. The bottom edge seems too flat: is your medium-gray inner glow on? The washing out of the top of the symbol diminishes its impact for me. Instead of a white-to-green gradient overlay at 100% opacity, I would at least lower the opacity or, even better, use a green-to-black gradient overlay as prescribed by the tutorial you reference.
beautiful icon ! very well done !
thnx
It's a P ! and it's a button!
