Your idea is good, but if you use a colored sky and water, would be better, leave the gulls as they are.... Good luck anyway.

Gulls are scavengers. They don't hunt.

Oh, we "get" it (it's not THAT complex a concept)...
It's just that it's unimpressive and visually off-putting, since the desaturated background with the overly high contrast highs and lows look jarring and technically lacking with the source photo jammed into the image.
