Denlig: The majority of the proposals in this contest do not look like 17th century paintings. ( 5 years and 552 days ago )
Zizounai: Indeed... 17th century portraits obey to specific rules.

Drivenslush: I know exactly what you two guys are saying, the big problem is without being able to use old paintings pictures it's a very difficult chop to do.. and since I have the drawing skills of a gopher.. I have to rely on painting filters, and those are a pain in the patoot..they do the right thing in one area, and completely screw up another area and don't equalize easily.. it's a toughy for sure

Zizounai: But it is still the subject matter, do not just make a painted portrait, but a 17th century portrait... Look at the google page given for the example. They all are on 3/4 pose, wear more or less strange costumes and they look at you. ( 5 years and 552 days ago )
skyangel: Driven, you could use multiple layers, mix and match filters on different opacities and mask out the areas where the filters screw up.

still26: Guys, the contest says it's a "GOAL" which means we are to try, to aim for a 17th century look. If the moderator wanted stricter rules he would have indicated the parameters for us to work with....this wasn't specified. It is about the journey, not so much about the destination...no? ( 5 years and 551 days ago )
Denlig: Every contest has a goal and I try to stick to it. The goal of this contest was not to simply transform a photo into a painting but to make a painting of the XVIIth century or something else that looks like it. Despite the quality of some of the proposals, I think I will put a better rating on those who make this effort. ( 5 years and 551 days ago )
Contest Moderator: To clarify: yes it must have that 17th century look, there's a link given to examples on purpose. ( 5 years and 549 days ago )
Drivenslush: hehehe... okay guys.. (And skyangel... missus smarty pants (god I love you) you are totally right.. and I layered and filtered till my brain was on fire and I couldn't figure it out and got three of my entries "temp removed" and I'm perfectly fine with that.. this is one of those contests that cause a little kerfuffle and that is just the way life is.. it is nice to see everyone getting excited about a contest again, almost like the old PXLeyes where everybody would comment and have fun conversations ( 5 years and 549 days ago )

1. The original photo is mine and it is in SBS for you to see.
2. The background textured layer was taken from Filter Forge "textures" I then blurred it, darkened it and oil painted it.
3. There is an oil paint filter on the man....then a black layer applied and painted out and desaturated.
4. Gradient in black applied and sandstone texture. (5 years and 552 days ago)

1. Original is my photo and is attached.
2. I used Buzz Sim filter on "SOFT" for a bit of a painterly effect.
3. Painted out the background then did a black overlay and painted the young monk out.
4. I desaturated by -19%
5. I did not use a texturizer (canvas, sandstone etc.) Do you think I ought to have?
Thank you for all your help. (5 years and 554 days ago)
